Thank you for visiting the Devon & Somerset Wing web site and I hope you find the information that you are looking for. We are extremely proud of our Wing and its many achievements since the amalgamation of both Devon and Somerset Wings some 10 years ago. The pace of life on a weekly basis for our staff is demanding to say the least and with over 1000 cadets at 29 units, boredom is never a word used within this Wing!

If you are thinking of joining the Corps as a cadet then I would suggest that you contact the nearest squadron or detached flight to your home and ring the Commanding Officer where you will be made most welcome. If you are an Adult and wish to join the Corps then please contact Wing Headquarters, Wyvern Barracks, Exeter on 01392 275173 during office hours. The Headquarters staff will take your contact details and one of my Wing Staff Officers will then contact you to discuss the options available and to suggest the nearest unit to you that requires adult help. We are always interested to hear from Adults who wish to help as either a Civilian Instructor, going into uniform as a Commissioned Officer or Non Commissioned Officer or helping on a Squadron Welfare Committee to raise much needed funds for the unit. You do not need a Service background to help within the Air Training Corps and, if you join us, I am sure that you will find it particularly rewarding, just like the 400 plus adults who help us in the Wing at present.
The Air Training Corps is a unique national youth organisation for young men and women aged 13 – 20. It is my belief that there is no other organisation that offers the youth of today such a diverse range of activities, from flying to adventurous training, music, sport, shooting and road marching – the list is only limited by people’s imagination. Cadets flourish within the Corps which provides training that will be useful in both the Services and in civilian life. The Royal Air Force provides uniforms for the cadets and arranges visits to RAF Stations. As the Devon & Somerset Wing we organise many activities such as adventure training in the Lake District and North Wales as well as a week-long camps at Penhale in Cornwall. Sport is very popular within the Wing and cadets have the opportunity to represent their unit at various levels such as wing or region. Our squadrons have many and varied training programmes so I am sure there will be something for everyone. The Wing also has a band which meets on a monthly basis at Norton Manor Camp in Taunton.
If you cannot find the information you seek then please telephone our Headquarters on the above number during office hours and I am sure someone will be able to help you.
If you are joining as a cadet or as a member of staff or just want to help in another way such as sponsorship, then I look forward to meeting you – don’t delay, call us now and join a youth organisation where you will be part of something special.
B W Wills-Pope MBE Wing Commander
